Why Is My Candle Scent Not Projecting Strongly?
If your IKOU candle scent feels softer than expected, you're not alone — and there's usually a simple explanation. Here's a full guide to understanding and improving your candle's fragrance experience.
Room Size & Environment
The space your candle burns in plays a big role in how strongly the scent is experienced:
| Factor | How It Affects Scent Throw |
|---|---|
| Room size | Larger rooms dilute fragrance more quickly |
| Ceiling height | High ceilings mean scent has more space to disperse |
| Airflow and ventilation | Strong airflow carries scent away faster |
| Open windows or fans | Can significantly reduce scent intensity |
| Placement within the room | Central placement generally improves scent circulation |
For best results, burn your candle in a small to medium sized, relatively enclosed space with minimal drafts.
Wick Maintenance
Proper wick care is one of the most important factors in fragrance performance:
- Always trim wicks to approximately 5mm before each burn
- Burn long enough for a full melt pool to form across the surface — this releases the most fragrance
- Avoid burning beyond 3–4 hours as this can cause the wick to mushroom or become uneven.
If wicks become too short, mushroomed, or uneven, fragrance projection can be noticeably affected. See Candle Care Recommendations for our full wick care guide.
Natural Fragrance Variation
IKOU candles are made with natural essential oils and botanical blends — and natural fragrance is inherently different from synthetic fragrance oils.
Some of our aromas are intentionally softer and more subtle — creating a genuine aromatherapy experience rather than an overpowering scent. This is by design, not a fault.
Scent intensity can also vary naturally depending on:
- The specific blend and its botanical composition
- Seasonal ingredient variation between batches
- The environment the candle is burned in
Sensory Adaptation
It's also very common to become accustomed to a scent over time with regular use — making it feel less noticeable, even when the candle is performing exactly as it should.
Try burning the candle in a different room, or taking a break from it for a few days — you may find the scent feels much stronger when you return to it.
No Formula Changes
If you've noticed a difference between batches, please know this does not necessarily indicate a formula change or fault. IKOU formulations are carefully developed to maintain consistency while still embracing the natural variation that occurs within botanical ingredients.
